COURSE OBJECTIVE:
• To acquire knowledge on green systems and the environment, energy technology and efficiency, and sustainability.
• To provide green engineering solutions to energy demand, reduced energy footprint.

UNIT I

PRINCIPLES OF GREEN CHEMISTRY

Historical Perspectives and Basic Concepts. The twelve Principles of Green Chemistry and green engineering. Green chemistry metrics- atom economy, E factor, reaction mass efficiency, and other green chemistry metrics, application of green metrics analysis to synthetic plans.

UNIT II

POLLUTION TYPES

Pollution – types, causes, effects, and abatement. Waste – sources of waste, different types of waste, chemical, physical and biochemical methods of waste minimization and recycling.


UNIT III

GREEN REAGENTS AND GREEN SYNTHESIS

Environmentally benign processes- alternate solvents- supercritical solvents, ionic liquids, water as a reaction medium, energy-efficient design of processes- photo, electro and sono chemical methods, microwave-assisted reactions

UNIT IV

DESIGNING GREEN PROCESSES

Safe design, process intensification, in process monitoring. Safe product and process design – Design for degradation, Real-time Analysis for pollution prevention, inherently safer chemistry for accident prevention

UNIT V

GREEN NANOTECHNOLOGY

Nanomaterials for water treatment, nanotechnology for renewable energy, nanotechnology for environmental remediation and waste management, nanotechnology products as potential substitutes for harmful chemicals, environmental concerns with nanotechnology

TOTAL: 45 PERIODS

COURSE OUTCOMES:
CO1: To understand the principles of green engineering and technology
CO2: To learn about pollution using hazardous chemicals and solvents
CO3: To modify processes and products to make them green and safe.
CO4: To design processes and products using green technology
CO5 – To understand advanced technology in green synthesis
